Biden affirms his unconditional support for Netanyahu and Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians in Gaza.
Israeli PM rejects Palestinian sovereignty over Gaza and the occupied territory, rebuffing President Biden’s push for two-state solution.
Biden says Israel not opposed to two-state solution for Palestinians – This comes just a day after Netanyahu rejected two-state solution.
Joe Biden has said that the Israeli prime minister is not opposed to all two-state solutions for Palestinians. The US president spoke with Benjamin Netanyahu on a call on Friday about possible solutions for the creation of an independent Palestinian state, suggesting one path could involve a non-militarised government, according to Reuters.
Mr Biden told reporters after the call: “There are a number of types of two-state solutions. There’s a number of countries that are members of the UN that ... don’t have their own militaries. And so, I think there’s ways in which this could work.” www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/joe-biden-benjamin-netanyahu-two-state-solution-israel-b2481963.html
Netanyahu says Israel will be from the river to the sea, publicly rejects US push for two-state solution.
"I clarify that in any arrangement in the foreseeable future, with an accord or without an accord, Israel must have security control over the entire territory west of the Jordan River. That's a necessary condition. It clashes with the principle of sovereignty but what can you do," Benjamin Netanyahu said during a press conference in Tel Aviv.
Netanyahu just said Israel will permanently occupy the land ‘from the river to the sea.’ The U.S. media toned it down or ignored it.
He was double-crossing decades of official U.S. policy, which is supposed to favor a two-state solution, with an independent Palestine alongside Israel. Why is the U.S. mainstream hiding Netanyahu’s provocative statement. https://mondoweiss.net/2024/01/netanyahu-just-said-israel-will-permanently-occupy-the-land-from-the-river-to-the-sea-the-u-s-media-is-covering-it-up/
The US decades-long practice of ensuring impunity for Israel’s brutal and illegal occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is responsible for the catastrophic Palestinian suffering, destruction, and death.
Gaza infant, maternal deaths spike in war doctors and aid officials say
The humanitarian catastrophe caused by Israel’s three-month military campaign against Hamas in Gaza counts some 52,000 pregnant women among its greatest victims. As airstrikes push 1.9 million people into an ever-smaller corner of the besieged enclave, disease is spreading, famine is looming and levels of anemia are so high that the risk of postpartum hemorrhage has soared and breastfeeding is often impossible. Forty percent of pregnancies are high-risk, CARE international estimates.
The 16-year blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt after Hamas won control of Gaza had already made pregnancy and childbirth more difficult for expecting mothers. Before the current conflict, hospitals often lacked adequate equipment and training for neonatal staff, according to Medical Aid for Palestinians, and more than half of pregnant women were anemic. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/01/21/gaza-childbirth/
We cannot operate, we have no drugs’: Gaza’s indirect casualties mount as health service decimated.
Tens of thousands with life-threatening illnesses ‘defenceless’ after months without treatment, say doctors Health services in Gaza are “decimated”, with medical staff exhausted after three months of war forced to extract shrapnel without adequate pain relief, conduct amputations without anaesthetics and watch children die of cancers because of a lack of facilities and medicine.
Dozens of interviews with doctors and medical administrators in Gaza reveal a catastrophic and deteriorating situation as health services struggle to cope with tens of thousands of casualties of the continuing Israeli offensive in the territory and the effects of the acute humanitarian crisis.
Attention has focused on the direct casualties of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, but medical specialists are increasingly concerned about indirect victims of the war. Tens of thousands in Gaza with chronic life-threatening illnesses have gone without treatment for months, and are now “without defences”, their bodies’ weakened by malnutrition, cold and fatigue, doctors say. In one incident described to the Guardian, a child with a brain condition died hours before a UN team arrived with vital medicine. www.theguardian.com/world/2024/jan/19/gaza-war-indirect-casualties-mount-health-service-decimated
Fears grow for largest remaining hospital in Gaza as Israeli forces bombard Khan Younis
Staff say situation at Nasser hospital ‘catastrophic’ as Israeli airstrikes hit metres away Israeli forces have advanced further into southern Gaza, with airstrikes and close-combat fighting nearing areas crowded with more than a million people who have sought refuge from fighting and destruction across the rest of the territory.
The prospect of major operations taking place in terrain with such a dense and vulnerable population is “deeply concerning”, say aid officials, who fear Gaza’s largest remaining hospital may have to be closed or evacuated. www.theguardian.com/world/2024/jan/19/israel-gaza-war-largest-remaining-hospital-nasser-khan-younis-attack-fears-strike
Israeli terrorism in the occupied West Bank continues to escalate.
Drone strikes, mass arrests, and demolitions: Massive Israeli raid kills at least 11 Palestinians in northern West Bank
Israeli drone strikes have killed nine Palestinians in Nablus and Tulkarem during a massive ongoing army operation in the West Bank. As many as a 1,000 Palestinians have been detained in what locals are calling a "collective punishment" campaign. Throughout the invasion of both the Nur Shams and Tulkarem refugee camps, Israeli forces have embarked on a campaign of destruction, using bulldozers to raze streets and critical infrastructure of the camp, in a practice being decried by residents as “collective punishment.”
Faisal Salama, the director of Tulkarem camp services and the spokesman for the factions in the camp told Mondoweiss that the streets, sewage, and electricity networks in the camp, which had all been previously damaged in prior Israeli raids, were targeted once again and further destroyed, causing irreparable damage.
As the US and Western allies fuss about “possible escalation in the region,” stopping the genocide of 2M Palestinians matters little to these adherents of real-politik.
